Vintage 2023
Description
Vintage
Viticulture
This is the Sauvignon Blanc that put Villa Maria on the world map. A blend of both Marlborough’s Wairau and Awatere Valleys our winemakers take great care to ensure this wine showcases exceptional balance and consistency every vintage. The room-filling aromatics and strikingly crisp character of our Private Bin Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc are why it is so popular and such a memorable experience.
Initially, the classic Awatere aromas jump out of the glass, such as lemongrass, jalapeño peppers and fresh herbs. The Awatere Valley is influenced by Mt Tapuae-o-uenuku and the cool alpine winds and fresh sea breezes protect the natural acidity in this wine. In contrast, the Wairau Valley has warmer summer months, influencing vineyards to produce a pungent Sauvignon Blanc with ripe citrus and tropical fruit flavours.
The Marlborough growing season started off well with very little frost pressure during spring. Flowering went without a glitch, and due to healthy soil moisture levels the canopies looked lush and vibrant. The start of 2023 summer was mild and unseasonably humid and wet. In February the weather settled and presented us sunny and warm autumn condition that provided execellent conditions for our fruit.

Tasting notes

  • Fresh Herbs
  • Lemongrass
  • Lime

Our Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc combines the best of both sub-regions for a consistently classic Marlborough style. Initially, the cool climate Awatere aromas jump out of the glass, displaying lime, lemongrass, and fresh herbs. In contrast, the warmer Wairau Valley vineyards produce heady aromatics reminiscent of grapefruit and tropical fruit flavours.
